Office space for rent in Groningen, between the central station and the campus

Groningen is the capital of the province of Groningen and a city where offices cluster mainly around stations, campuses and hospitals. In its 2021 strategy for employment areas, the municipality names five areas it invests in to boost the economy: the city center, the station area, Campus Groningen, Europapark and Corpus den Hoorn. Campus Groningen has two parts: Zernike Campus and the Healthy Ageing Campus around the UMCG.

Office areas in Groningen and their profile

Each office area in Groningen has its own target group. So start with what your company does and who it works with.

Europapark and Kempkensberg

Europapark is the office area around Groningen Europapark station, on the southeast side of the city. According to the municipality, Europapark is a public transport hub that, together with neighboring Kempkensberg, is very well suited to offices. The area is becoming a mixed residential and business district in which work remains the main function. The municipality mainly targets regular office users, such as IT companies and business service providers.

Station area around Groningen Central Station

The station area is the zone around the main station, directly south of the city center. The municipality is developing the north and south sides together, with work as the dominant function. For the south side, the plan assumes about 40 percent work, 40 percent housing and 20 percent amenities. The station building itself dates from 1896 and is a national monument.

Zernike Campus in the north

Zernike Campus lies in the north of Groningen and houses faculties of the University of Groningen and Hanze University of Applied Sciences. The southern part is for education and research, while the northern side is a business area. The municipality uses a set of admission criteria to select companies that strengthen the campus. It is a logical choice for a knowledge-based company that wants to work with the university or the Hanze.

Healthy Ageing Campus and Corpus den Hoorn

If you work in healthcare or life sciences, two areas are worth a look:

  • Healthy Ageing Campus: the campus around the UMCG. Room for growth is limited here; the municipality is studying expansion along Vrydemalaan.
  • Corpus den Hoorn: the employment area around Martini Hospital, with many jobs in the biomedical sector. The municipality focuses it on healthcare, laboratories, practice space and supporting functions.
