Description
Oostenburg is part of the Eastern Islands, which were partly built up in the IJ around 1650 and partly dug out of what were then meadows to the east of the city. In the coming years, Oostenburg will be developed into a bold new city district with around 1,800 homes.
There will be an attractive mix of social, mid-range and private-sector rental housing, owner-occupied apartments, self-build homes, leisure spaces, hospitality and business activity. The historic core of Oostenburg will be preserved, in the form of the 19th-century Van Gendthallen, the monumental Werkspoorhal, and the old quay walls. It will become a district with green roofs and reuse of materials from its industrial past. Solar panels and geothermal heat supply will help make Oostenburg a sustainable neighbourhood. It is already popular thanks to the café-restaurants Roest and Rosa & Rita, as well as Inntel hotel & restaurant with its terrace on the quay.
